Starting with the Basics: A Beginner’s Guide to Extempore

As a tool used in the classroom and for remote learning Extempore brings peace of mind that your curriculum doesn’t need to get interrupted regardless of the situation you might find yourself in. During this session we will go through all of Extempore's key features and best practices when first getting started. Please join me to learn how to enroll your students, create a basic assignment, and how to provide personalized & pointed feedback. (45-minute training session with a 15-minute Q&A to wrap things up).

using Extempore for oral skills testing

Presenter: Dr. Susana Perez-Castillejo

I will explain the pedagogical reasoning for using Extempore for different types of speaking practice and how Extempore's functionality supports teachers with being able to assess oral skills remotely, especially when there are concerns about the integrity of students’ responses. I will showcase some concrete examples of past assessments and what it looks like to complete them from a student's perspective. (30-minute presentation followed with a 15-minute brainstorming session).

Dr. Perez-Castillejo is a professor of Spanish Linguistics at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the university she teaches Spanish language, culture, and linguistics courses, and is also the coordinator of the first three semesters of Spanish language instruction. As a researcher, her areas of expertise include Spanish phonology, phonetics, sociolinguistics, and second language processing. Dr. Perez-Castillejo received her Ph.D. from University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

A Can-Do Lens When Creating an Online Language Placement Tool

In this webinar, learn how one district in Southern California utilized Extempore's unique and timely online features to convert its face-to-face placement exam to a remote one. Find out how the placement exam was developed using ACTFL's Can-Do Statements, as well as how to ensure proper placement of Heritage Language Learners. You won't want to miss this one! (30-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute discussion/ Q&A). 

Alfredo Varela is an ELD/Dual Language Immersion TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) at the Santa Paula Unified School District in Santa Paula, California. Prior to this, he taught Spanish for Heritage Speakers, English Language Development, and held the Response to Intervention Coordinator position at Santa Paula High School. He has 18 years of public school teaching experience, and holds a BA in Spanish, a MAT World Languages, and a MS in Educational Administration from National University. Recently, he contributed to the development and review of the 2019 World Languages Standards for California Public Schools as a Standards Advisory Committee member, and he is the President of the Santa Barbara-Ventura Association of World Language Teachers since 2018. He also collaborated with the development of a curriculum guide that accompanies the book Latino Leaders Speak: Personal Stories of Struggle and Triumph. He is a member of professional organizations such as CLTA, SWCOLT, ACTFL, and ASCD.

Learn how to collaborate with colleagues and students on making Extempore an essential part of teaching and learning in and out of the classroom: in this session, we will talk about best practices when rolling out Extempore as well as key recommendations for getting the most out of the platform throughout the year. John Jacobs is a Latin teacher and the World Languages Department chair at the Montclair Kimberley Academy Upper School in Montclair, New Jersey. He has ten years of teaching experience and holds a BA, MA, and PhD in Classics.
